Understanding how trains work is essential to building a powerful and profitable rail empire. This guide covers the basics of train types, upgrades, schedules, and how to optimize performance.
Train Types & Best Use Cases
Each train in Rail Nation is designed for a specific job. Choosing the right one matters:
All-Rounder: Good for Integration on crest routes
Sprinter: Ideal for Competitions and Happy Hours*
Long Haul: Best for direct deliveries to Warehouses
Short Haul: Great for short-distance supply chains
Marathoner: Efficient for alternate industry connections
Traction Giant: Excellent for hauling on off-crest routes
*Happy Hour = Industries with zero wait time (00:00)
Cargo vs. Passenger Trains:
Trains are also split by what they transport. Choose accordingly based on your goal.
Upgrading Trains
Train performance improves with upgrades to speed, acceleration, and reliability.
How to Upgrade:
Research the upgrade first in the Research menu
Select your train from the Train list
Click Upgrade and apply it manually
After increasing tractive force (more wagons), remember to reset your schedule to reflect the new capacity.
Setting and Optimizing Schedules
To create or edit a schedule:
Click on your train
Choose New or Edit Schedule
Set pick-up and delivery points
Click Let’s Go (up to 10 stops allowed)
Integration Stops:
Use industries in between to reduce wait times and increase profit.
Example: Cattle → Leather Industry → City
Don't forget to reload at the Leather industry if continuing delivery!
PLUS Feature – Timetable Calculator:
This shows profit/hour estimates, ideal for fine-tuning schedules.
Why Isn’t My Train at Full Speed?
Short routes = less time to accelerate
Poor condition = reduced speed
Keep your trains maintained and run longer routes when possible.
Maximising Profit
Adjust routes regularly based on:
Demand & Prices – Follow the market
Wait Times – Avoid queues with smart routing
Train Type & Distance – Match train to route length
Upgrades & Wagons – Use your full capacity
Strategic planning = better profits.
Renaming Your Train
Want to rename a train?
Select the engine → Click Rename → Enter a new name.
Note: Renamed trains lose their type label—use clear, memorable names!
