# Engine House

Engine House

This building determines how many trains you can actively use at any one time (excluding bonus trains, the Career Engine, [the Pollux](https://support.rail-nation.com/articles/75), and the Magnus).  By upgrading the Engine house you can operate more trains, haul more goods or passengers, and earn more money.  However, the building can only be upgraded to a certain level within each era, as per the table below: 

-   **Era 1**: 7
    
-   **Era 2**: 11
    
-   **Era 3**: 15
    
-   **Era 4**: 19
    
-   **Era 5**: 22
    
-   **Era 6**: 25
    

This building always starts at level 1, irrespective of the era you start the round on.  Any additional trains owned can be stored within the [Museum](https://support.rail-nation.com/articles/53).

On x2 speed worlds the upgrade time is reduced to 50% and on x4 worlds to 25%.

-   **Level 4:** Upgrade Cost $45,000, Upgrade Time 00:03:00, Prestige 10, Maximum Active Trains 4, Maximum Trains Owned 20
    
-   **Level 5:** Upgrade Cost $200,000, Upgrade Time 01:00:00, Prestige 15, Maximum Active Trains 5, Maximum Trains Owned 25
    
-   **Level 6:** Upgrade Cost $400,000, Upgrade Time 03:00:00, Prestige 20, Maximum Active Trains 6, Maximum Trains Owned 30
